Directions to the Casa del Gavilan

From Denver:
From Denver and Colorado Springs, follow Interstate 25 south of Raton 5 miles to the exit for Highway 64. Turn onto Highway 64 west toward Cimarron. Go through Cimarron to the west side of town. CAUTION! SPEED LIMITS IN CIMARRON ARE STRICTLY ENFORCED! On the west side of Cimarron,turn left (south) on Highway 21. Follow Highway 21 six miles to the Casa entrance, which is on the right side of the highway. Use caution for deer on the road nearthe Philmont headquarters buildings.


From Santa Fe and Albuquerque:
From Santa Fe or Albuquerque follow Interstate 25 north. During daylight hours and in good weather, the most scenic route to Casa del Gavilan exits Interstate 25 at the FIRST exit for the town of Springer, New Mexico. At the end of the exit ramp, turn right and proceed toward Springer. As you come into Springer, the Brown Hotel is on the right side of the road. This is a fine hotel with a very good restaurant. Just beyond the Brown Hotel, make a left turn onto Highway 21 toward Cimarron. This highway crosses open range, so please be careful of livestock on the road. Also, watch for deer and elk near Springer Reservoir and near the Kit Carson Museum at Rayado. Follow Highway 21 for 30 miles from Springer to Mile Marker #6. The entrance to the Casa is on the left about 1/4 mile past Mile Marker #6.

If you are arriving in the area after dark or in bad weather, the scenic route may not be the best option. A more-traveled route is to follow Interstate 25 north just past Springer to the Highway 58 exit. At the end of the exit ramp, turn left onto Highway 58 toward Cimarron. When Highway 58 comes into Cimarron, there is a stop sign. At this stop sign turn left onto Highway 64. CAUTION! SPEED LIMITS IN CIMARRON ARE STRICTLY ENFORCED! Follow Highway 64 about two miles to the west side of Cimarron and turn left (south) on Highway 21. Follow Highway 21 six miles to the Casa entrance, which is on the right side of the road at the top of the winding hill just before Mile Marker #6. Use caution for deer on the road near the Philmont headquarters buildings. You may see buffalo belonging to Philmont Scout Ranch on the right side of Highway 21 between Cimarron and the Philmont Base Camp.

If you have an extra hour or so and want the most scenic route to Casa del Gavilan, follow Highway 285 north out of Santa Fe toward Espanola. Turn onto Highway 68 and follow this into Taos. In Taos, turn right onto Highway 64 toward Cimarron. Take Highway 64 through Eagle Nest into Cimarron. As you come into the west side of Cimarron, turn right (south) onto Highway 21. CAUTION! SPEED LIMITS IN CIMARRON ARE STRICTLY ENFORCED!  Follow Highway 21 six miles to the Casa entrance, which is on the right side of the road at the top of the winding hill just before Mile Marker #6. Use caution for deer on the road near the Philmont headquarters buildings. You may see buffalo belonging to Philmont Scout Ranch on the right side of Highway 21 between Cimarron and the Philmont Base Camp.

From Dallas, Fort Worth, and Amarillo:
From Fort Worth or Dallas, follow Highway 287 northwest out of Fort Worth to Amarillo. In Amarillo, take Highway 87 northwest to Clayton, New Mexico. In Clayton pick up Highway 56 toward Springer. There are very limited services on the 90-mile stretch between Clayton and Springer, so check your gas before departing Clayton. During daylight hours and in good weather, the most scenic route to Casa del Gavilan crosses the main four-lane street of Springer and continues onto Highway 21 toward Cimarron. Highway 21 crosses open range, so please be careful of livestock on the highway. Also, watch for deer and elk near Springer Reservoir and near the Kit Carson Museum at Rayado. Follow Highway 21 for 30 miles from Springer to Mile Marker #6. The entrance to the Casa is on the left about 1/4 mile beyond Mile Marker #6.

Use caution for deer on the road near the Philmont headquarters buildings. You may see buffalo belonging to Philmont Scout Ranch on the right side of Highway 21 between Cimarron and the Philmont Base Camp.

If you have some extra time and are interested in some of the best scenery northeastern New Mexico has to offer, follow Interstate 40 west out of Amarillo. At the San Jon, New Mexico, exit follow Highway 469 north. As you come into the town of Logan, turn right onto Highway 54. Past Logan, turn left onto Highway 39 and follow this to the town of Roy, New Mexico. In Roy, turn northwest onto Highway 120. Just west of Roy, the highway drops into the Canadian River Gorge, a stunning chasm cut into the New Mexico Highlands. After climbing out of the gorge, Highway 120 will take you to Wagon Mound and Interstate 25. Follow Interstate 25 north to the first Springer exit. At the end of the exit ramp, turn right and proceed toward Springer. As you come into Springer, the Brown Hotel is on the right side of the road. This is a fine hotel with a very good restaurant. If it is after dark by the time you reach Springer, or the weather is bad, the more traveled route is to follow Interstate 25 north just past Springer to the Highway 58 exit. At the end of the exit ramp, turn left onto Highway 58 toward Cimarron. When Highway 58 comes into Cimarron there is a stop sign. At this stop sign, turn left onto Highway 64. CAUTION! SPEED LIMITS IN CIMARRON ARE STRICTLY ENFORCED! Follow Highway 64 about two miles to the west side of Cimarron and turn left (south) on Highway 21. Follow Highway 21 six miles to the Casa entrance which is on the right side of the road just at the top of the winding hill. Use caution for deer on the road near the Philmont headquarters buildings. You may see buffalo belonging to Philmont Scout Ranch on the right side of Highway 21 between Cimarron and the Philmont Base Camp.

Whichever route brings you to Casa del Gavilan, relax and enjoy the scenery, but be careful of livestock and wildlife on the road
